Waterfall project management is a methodology that splits the project into defined phases, unable to move on until the previous phase is complete. This enables a review to take place at the end of each phase to determine if the project deliverables are still pertinent, have adequate funding and resource and if the timescales are realistic.

The key phases are:

  • Initiation
  • Design
  • Build
  • Deliver
  • Post-Implementation

This is a commonly adopted methodology for long projects but not as effective for short duration projects.
